The Best Affiliate Programs and 25 Ways To PromotThem

Reviewing the latest online marketing trends

How can I make money online if I dont have a product or service to sell?

This a question I get quite often from readers of this site.

I get it. Creating your own product can be intimidating and its not for everyone.

Fortunately, theres a great alternative.

And thatspromoting affiliate products.

Why not leverage an existing product or service that you know sells well and just focus on the marketing instead?

This is a fantastic business model, available to anyone that can be extremely lucrative if you know how to do it.

The main problem with promoting affiliate programs is that there must be thousands of them out there. And 99% of them arent worth your time and effort to work with.

Just because youve found a high paying affiliate program, doesnt mean you should promote it right away.

Instead, do some research first before you decide to promote any product. I always look for the following key characteristics.

1. It works for me While this may seem obvious, there are so many products and services out there that dont do what they promise. Or they do, but they just dont work well.

Yet, people still promote these products because they are lured in by the promise of huge commissions or the rampantyou scratch my back and Ill scratch yoursmentality that is very prevalent in this industry.

Dont do this. You will lose trust and credibility and its never a good idea for a long-term sustainable business.

2. Ive used it myself This relates to point 1. Im only going to promote a product as an affiliate if Ive bought and used the product myself.

By using a product yourself, you will discover both the pros and cons of the product you are using which helps you write more credible reviews or case studies. This is important because the more trustworthy you are, the more likely your readers will click on your affiliate links.

3. Trusted Brand I prefer promoting affiliate products of company or person that I already know and trust. I know their products will be solid and that they treat their customers well. These are the brands that make the top affiliate programs.

People are more likely to search and buy from trusted brands. Plus you will find that trusted brands have a lower refund rate which means you get to keep more of your affiliate commissions.

4. Evergreen I know a lot of people make tons of money promoting product launches. However, for me, that is too much work. I like to focus more on programs that I can always promote, where I continue to earn long-term commissions for many months or even years down the line.

That is why I typically avoid promoting products that will launch for a couple of weeks and then close.

If you find an affiliate product meets these 4 characteristics above, then definitely consider taking the time to promote them.

Now that Ive listed what I look for in a good affiliate program, Im going to share some good ones that I personally promote and have made good money with.

I love promoting email service providers because they offer everything you want as an affiliate. I use bothActiveCampaignDripandConvertKitand all pay out recurring monthly commissions.

Which is great, is because ESPs are typically very sticky. Once you choose one, you typically will stay with it for years and years.

And as people you refer add more subscribers to their list, your commissions will also increase as well.

Email service providers are also very easy to promote. Thats because:

you can see what service people are using when signing up to various email lists.

Easy to write reviews and case studies

It doesnt take much effort to share your experience with using them.

Makes it more likely for a prospect to try their service with no risk to them.

Every successful business needs one

email marketing is easily one of the best ways to promote things online. And for that, you need a good autoresponder.

Here is a list of some of thebest email marketing softwareto promote.

Drip Free starter plan (under 100 leads), plus a 21-day free trial. Affiliate program pays 30% recurring commissions.

ConvertKit Pays 30% recurring commissions.

Aweber 30-day free trial and 30% recurring commissions.

GetResponse Has a full 1-month free trial and 33% recurring commissions.

ActiveCampaign Has a 14-day free trial. New affiliates earn 20% recurring commissions. But you can bump that up to 25-30% if you reach certain thresholds.

MailerLite Has a great free plan up to 1,000 subscribers.  Pays 30% recurring commissions.

There are several landing page building services out there. These products allow non-coders to build professional looking landing pages to collect emails, create sales pages and more.

It is very easy to demonstrate how these products work for your readers. Just start using them in your own business and write case studies detailing how they work for you.

These services are also quite sticky. Perhaps not as much as an email service provider, but customers usually stick around for several months if not longer when they find their favorite.

LeadPages Offers 30% recurring commissions, with yearly and twice-yearly options for potentially huge commissions.

ClickFunnels Offers 40% front-end commissions on ClickFunnels itself and also get credit for any of the upsells that a customer can take on. Also gives you 2nd tier commissions for referring other affiliates.

Whats innovative about ClickFunnels is that you can share any funnels you create inside, and use your share funnel url as an affiliate linklike this.

I talk more about using share funnels in myClickFunnels affiliate guidehere.

Instapage Earn 50% on initial payment and 30% recurring commissions for every month after.

The Web hosting niche contains some of the highest paying affiliate programs out there.

Web hosts are easy to promote because you can easily write about your own experience with your chosen web host and use tools likePingdomandGTMetrixto show how reliable and fast your site is. And theyre sticky. Users tend to stick with their web hosts for a long time unless something bad happens.

Affiliate programs for web hosts vary quite a bit. Many offer a tiered flat rate commission per sale. However, a select few web hosting affiliate programs do offer recurring commissions. Promote these brands and you can earn some really fat checks.

LiquidWeb Dedicated servers pay out 100% for the first monthly bill and 5% recurring commissions for the lifetime of a customer.

WPX Hosting This is the hosting we use here at SmartBusinessTrends. Offers between $70-$100 per sale depending on how many referrals you make.

Hostgator Get $100 per sale if you join through CommissionJunction. Or if you can push lots of volume, then you can earn up to $150 per sale through the in-house affiliate program. And thats just by selling shared hosting plans that start at $4 / month.

WordPress is the most popular CMS online. It powers many of the most popular blogs and sites you see on the web. With this popularity comes a huge ecosystem of WordPress themes and plugins.

Here are a couple of my favorite WordPress affiliate programs.

The Genesis Framework The most popular wordpress theme framework in use today. Has a huge community of child theme and plugin developers. Can promote the framework and all Studiopress created child themes for 35% commissions.

Sell their Pro Plus All-in One Theme pack and earn a cool $139.98 from the sale.

Thrive Themes Theme club and plugin developer started by Shane Melaugh who is one of my favorite marketers. Can earn 50% on upfront sales and 25% on recurring commissions.Thrive LeadsandThrive Architectare two of their flagship products which are easy to promote.

Now that you have an idea of some of the best affiliate programs to join, how do you go about promoting them? Here are 25 examples of successful marketers promoting these types of affiliate programs.

Use these as inspiration and pick a method or two to promote your own favorite affiliate product.

1. Mention product in an epic content post

4. Compile a list of people using the product

6. Publish a product alternatives post

8. Publish a Why I Switched Post

12. Create a Youtube video tutorial highlighting the product

13. Compose a detailed product case study

14. Include product as part of a list post

16. Integrate it in as part of an Epic How-To-Guide

17. Show earnings from product as part of a monthly income report

23. Incorporate product as part of a Tools I cant live without post

24. Write a product updates post when new features are announced

25. Create a recommendations tool that matches user with the best product for them

If you dont have your own product or service to sell, then promoting the best affiliate programs can be just as lucrative.

Have you had any luck promoting affiliate products on your own site?

Id love to hear about any affiliate programs that you have been successful promoting. Feel free to share in the comments.

What a wonderful resource youve put together Kinley! Thanks for sharing.

I can vouch for Aweber having an excellent affiliate program. Although their commissions may start out small when people join, it can really grow to a substantial amount after some time. The true definition of passive income!

Thanks for stopping by Lisa! Yes, Aweber is one of my favorites! I still get a check from them month after month for promotions Ive done for them many years ago.

Great post and really like your site. I got some great inspiration from those examples you included at the end.

For those that are more into paid traffic, I would also recommend the AffPlaybook affiliate program. Its a forum with a great community and it offers 50% recurring commissions for life.

Thanks for the recommendation Ron. Ive heard good things about AffPlaybook, but I dont do paid traffic at the moment so I havent had a chance to take a look. But sounds interesting, and 50% lifetime recurring commissions sounds very enticing!

Great article! Lots of great information here. Affiliate Marketing can be super profitable given the right system and mentor. Theres a lot of fluff information out there that leaves most people cluttered.

Ive found keeping things simple and clear-cut is best practice. Anyways once again, great article! Ill be subscribing for more.

Appreciate you stopping by Mark. Having a great mentor can definitely be very helpful, but I think the key for me is to take action! Thats how you will really learn things and start making money online.

Loved your approach to the topic, Kinley; I think I might have to steal your idea and rework my own post on the topic. 😉

Of course, thanks so much for including one of Traffic Generation Caf posts here; honored.

Thanks so much for including my little blog in here.

Your blog is one of my favorites Ramsay! I read it all the time.

Interesting ideas. I am new doing affiliate marketing and hope I can see a difference after trying out some of your ideas. Many Thanks!

I would like to also add that people deciding to become Affiliate Marketers should try to work on finding Niche market Affiliate Programs.

I think many people have thoughts of working with Amazons program but have not thought outside of the box. I do want to mention that we have just started our own Affiliate Program. It is very niche. We work with Mark Lewis Art. He is a listed artist and done shows with big names in the industry. Howard Behrens, Michael Godard, Chris Dellorco and others. He is offering 10% commission, free signup, free video training. His original artwork in Las Vegas ranges in price from $2500 to $15,000! So the upside to the program is appealing. So perhaps you could include in future articles the benefits of going Niche instead of big box. It can be a game changer for those individuals that really want a fighting chance to make Affiliate Marketing a way of life.

Hello and reading this has finally made me understand how the system works. I want to start affiliate marketing. I have found a company that I want to promote but need someone that can take over all of the phases and get it up and running. Aweber is a good one to use as an autoresponder and I already have a membership. Just have to go ahead and activate it. I hope you can give me some insight. Do I go ahead on my own or get with a plan that can do this for me at a minimal cost.

Thanks for a nice job. I am currently promoting some of the affiliate programs listed here and making a few dollars from them. But I must say that making money from affiliate programs is not rocket science; it requires hard work and perseverance. Affiliate marketing keeps evolving daily and any serious affiliate should be ready to change tactics and invest time and money in order to beat the competition.

You may need some traffic (but a few traffic is enough to start with) to get guaranteed success especially if the traffic is targeted. Whatever be the case, I have so much faith in affiliate marketing because of the relative success it has given me in the area of making money online.

Thanks once again. Do have a pleasant day.

This is gold Im very interested in helping small business owners get maximum return on their marketing, and this list will help me to help them!

We get it. You took an amazing photo, put on the perfect filter, uploaded it and now youre waiting for the likes and comments to roll in your feed. Its a great feeling and payoff when you know your content does well on Instagram. And for your brand, you want that feeling to be consistent.

However, getting others to engage with your Instagram isnt as simple as uploading decent content and calling it a day. Your brand must understand how to promote your Instagram to reach your biggest audience possible. Theres more than700 million usersand casting the perfect net with your promotions can reel in big rewards.

The hard part is just learning how to promote your Instagram for success. It shouldnt take a PR expert to make you successful, so skip the pay-per-follower sites and follow these 12 tips to organically grow and promote your Instagram:

Instagram has turned into a must-have social network for marketers. Even more so, younger audiences continue to seek Instagram for brand interactions, engagement and personality. According to theSprout Social Q2 2017 Index, 51% of millennials enjoy brand personality on Instagram.

The platform continues to be an environment of sharing, liking, tagging and commenting. Additionally, younger generations can be inspired to make purchases on Instagram, despite its limited link in bio.

Instagrams core users can navigate the app seamlessly, although its not as traditional as marketing on Facebook or Twitter. The visual appeal of the app is unlike other networks as well. Images and videos from brands drive engagement, which only help you promote your Instagram even further.

According to ourQ1 2017 Index, 60% millennials and 67% of Gen Xers said they were more likely to make a purchase from a brand they follow on social media. And the single-scroll environment of Instagram puts your content front and center in the viewers smartphone or tablet.

Think about how much more engaged your brands audience would be if they had to scroll through each Tweet one at a time. It should be no surprise that a report from Forrester discovered brands see user interactions on 2.2% of their posts, which is the highest by far per network.

If youre a brand looking to promote your Instagram, this is the perfect network to boost audience engagement. Its all about learning the environment and taking advantage of how users interact.

When you want to promote your Instagram for your brand, the first thing to do is make a clear distinction between your business and personal accounts. For starters, you should optimize your Instagram account so youre focusing on the audience and not just the product.

This means selfies, friend groups and travel photos need to stay out of your brands Instagram account. While it seems completely obvious, a surprising amount of personal content makes its way to brand feeds. Think of what your audience wants to seenot your friends or an inside joke.

On the other hand, this doesnt mean your brands Instagram feed should only be full of products.Polaroiddoes an excellent job of separating the business from personal without taking out the personality. Its feed is extremely inviting to both newcomers and fans alike.

Striking a good balance between business and personal can give a little something to all of your followers on Instagram.

The majority of your customers know they can probably find you by doing a quick search on Instagram Explore. Your job is to make it as painless as possible to find you. Dont make it harder by using different profile names across all your networks. Keep all yoursocial media handlesconsistent and simple by following these best practices:

For example,Revolution Breweryuses the same handle across networks, simply titled RevBrewChicago. The shortened username makes it easier for users to find the brewery, but by adding Revolution Brewery as the Instagram profile name, both are searchable.

In the same vein as your username, your bio should be just as simple and match your brand. Keep Instagram bios to a minimum, but at the same time, make sure you mention who you are and what you do. Because at the end of the day, this is one of the few places to truly promote your Instagram.

Thats why its essential to always have a link in your bio. Using URL shortening tools such as Bit.ly helps you keep your link concise and easily trackable. And within Sproutssocial media publishing tools, you have instant access to Bit.ly shortening for social posts, including Instagram.

While linking to your homepage isnt the worst idea, several brands use this space to link to promotional, sales or other marketing landing pages. This way you can keep the move from Instagram to your site more cohesive.

As a rule of thumb, hashtags are a great source of discovery on Instagram. Whether you want to increase your visibility or find exactly what youre looking for, hashtags for Instagramare the best way to do so.

Its a good idea to continually search the newest hashtags in your industry. The hashtag doesnt have to exactly correlate with your brand, but it should still be relevant. Once you find some candidates, use them in campaigns, to find new followers and get that little extra reach!

Did you know7 in 10 Instagram hashtagsare branded? Thats why you should also look to craft your own unique branded hashtag to build more awareness around your profile. Using a combination of both branded and standard hashtags is a great way to track engagement.

With SproutsInstagram analytics tools, you have the flexibility to track outbound hashtag performance by selecting any number of profiles. See what garners the most engagement and how your branded hashtags work in broader industries.

Let your creative side shine with hashtags like Nests Caughtonnest, which shows real-life events captured on customers security cameras. Even hashtags like AskWestElm show you simple party favors that can make your home a little fancier.

Lastly, monitor hashtags your competitors use too. While it may not be your intention to compete on certain hashtags, you could still end up discovering ways to better reach your potential customers.

With geotagging features on Instagram, its easy to make yourself seen across your city or in other parts of the world. If your business has multiple locations, use geotags to promote your Instagram in various locations. This gives Instagram users a chance to see an assortment of photos and videos tagged at a specific location.

Geotags create a hub of stored content. It also gives youa great opportunity to seeuser-generated contentshowcasing your brand or place of business. From there, you can engage with customers that tagged you and thank them for using your services.

For example, if you search The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you would find the Instagram location tag. This is the official tag of the venue where you can get tickets or see others posting. Thousands of people use this geotag when theyre in Cleveland, which gives the brand plenty of engagement opportunities.

If youre a brick and mortar store, Instagram geotags can be critical to effectively promoting your Instagram. Make sure your business is geotagged so customers can post their photos. Additionally,Instagram uses Facebooks APIto locate business results on the platform. Check your Facebook location settings to ensure youre set up correctly.

Promoting your Instagram needs its subtletiesotherwise, your page will look like a billboard of advertisements. Its always best to mix up your feed by avoiding constant hard-sell posts.

Unless youre a major brand with massive recognition, you have to be a bit more subtle with selling. When users come to your feed, try to engage instead of directly sell. There are so many other creative ways you can sell to your audience without seeming like a shady used-car salesman.

For example,Lush Cosmeticsis smart about the way they sell its product. Instead of going into grave detail about why you need it, the Instagram photo does all the talking alongside an informative caption. This is a visual space, so having your most creative folks handle your Instagram is a smart way to always look fresh.

Try to see Instagram as a promotional tool that drives traffic to your product pages. There you can do hard-selling calls to action and phrases. Youll go far on Instagram if you can produce amazing photos and videos, but your message shouldnt be lost or overbearing.

If youre following the appropriate steps to promote your Instagram, heres a trick you might want to explore. According toCuralate, a visual analytics and marketing platform, images with high levels of blue can generate up to 24% more likes than those with red or orange colors.

Additionally, photos that are brighter-colored can increase engagement by 24% as well when compared to darker images. With nearly 65% of Instagram posts receiving between 0 and 10 likes, its important to find any way possible to get more people to like, engage and respond to your posts.

Were definitely not recommending for every single Instagram photo to be blue, but when you put in the time and effort into a post, youre more likely to see your audience participate.

While its important to focus on new ways to promote your Instagram, you cant keep your efforts to just one network. To truly build your audience and promote your brand on Instagram, post links to your feed on other social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

According to Social Media Examiner, each social channelhas its own uniqueness when it comes to building an audience and promotion. On the other hand, you cant put all your eggs in one Instagram basket.

Blackhawks Store (@BlackhawksStore)June 27, 2017

Try to promote across primary channels to boost Instagram traffic and followers. For example, the Blackhawks Store promotes its Instagram with giveaways.

Its a good idea to use Instagrams visual appeal to your advantage. You want to show off your product, services or employees in the best light, so why would you ever take poor pictures of them?

You can make Instagram special for your audience so they know this is where they can go to see the products or services in action. Or you try to use Instagram as a sole creative space for your brand, much like the companyReynolds Wrap.

The second you amaze your audience with your content, you earn their trust to follow and engage with you. At the same time, dont veer off the path too much. Some businesses use Instagram a little too freely to express their brand. Try tostick to your brand voiceand make sure each post resonates with that vibe.

While its great to use uniqueInstagram post ideas, its not always so easy coming up with them. If youre struggling for new ideas, try something you know is popular. Varioussocial media trendschange with the weather, but if you strike gold, youll see the payoff.

For example, one of the biggest trends in social media is face filters for selfies. Even though Snapchat started the game, both Facebook and Instagram are in the space. You can also take advantage ofInstagram Storiesto post fun and unique content with stickers, filters and other effects.

Taco Bell frequently uses Instagram Stories to make content resonate with viewers. This provides them with more ways to showcase their brand personality and ultimately helps promote their Instagram feed.

In-the-moment videos are popular enough for brands to get in the game. A report fromRecodefound Instagram Stories hit 250 million users, growing more than Snapchat.

Its always good to be in the know of social trends because they can easily help you drive traffic and build awareness without consistently creating new ideas.

How will you know where to improve your promotion strategy on Instagram if youre not tracking anything? This is an important question to ask yourself because so many brands tend to pick and choose different ways to promote their Instagram. But many dont track their steps to see if it developed a positive outcome.

WithInstagram reporting, you can successfully measure the performance of each post with presentation-ready reports to back up your claims. By monitoring your Instagram activity, you have better insights on engagement ratings and overall audience growth.

Whether you have to manage one ormultiple Instagram accounts, Sprout Social gives you the tools to measure the performance of each social profile. If you try to blindly promote your Instagram, youll end up missing out on what changes worked well and which ones fell short.

Theres so much that can go into a successful post, so make sure you have a better idea on your Instagram strategy by tracking key metrics.

As Instagram continues to surge in popularity, your brand has to take a slice of the pie and get active! Visual and interactive content is dominating the social scene, so take the right steps to get your Instagram visible.

20 Scam-Free Ways to Make Money OnlinFast

20 REAL ways people make money online.Cathy is in need of a legitimate way to make money online fast. She writes in: I was a nurse for almost 30 years when I became disabled from a car wreck. I am a very tough person (Im a redhead!) I went out last October and bought a new PC to try and make money online, but all I have succeeded in doing is getting further in debt. I know you know what I mean by all the scams that I fell into.

I have been reading A LOT and trying to learn as much as I can. I have run into conflicting stories, though. I just dont know where to start. I am not a computer tech, nor that knowledgeable about how to start. I am NOT asking for a handout; just a helping hand in the right direction.

Im not expecting to make tons of money today, but ANYTHING to help me get started in the right direction. I have saved thousands of lives and now I cant even get through the month without running out of food!

Cathy has the right attitude shes not looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, but instead a legitimate way to make some extra money online.

Having been sucked into some scams myself in the past, I know how difficult it can be to findrealways to make money online fast. Thus, Ive compiled this list. Some ways require knowledge of certain skills, but all these skills can be learned. If you dont know where to start, I suggest picking one of these ways and learning more about it, then trying it out!

Note:None of the 20 ways listed below contain affiliate links (that is, links that make me money if you click on them.) This list is for your benefit, not mine. Enjoy!

Mechanical Turk is a great way to make some extra cash. You probably wont make much more than a few dollars an hour, but its also dead simple to complete many of the tasks. Most tasks take less than a minute to complete and pay a few pennies. If you do a lot of MTurk, it could add up to at least some fun spending money.Sign up for free, then complete qualifications to earn access to higher-paying tasks.

iStockPhotois just one site that allows you to sell stock photos; there are others. Before you decide to go crazy and upload your whole album, take note of whats selling well and try your hand at doing something similar. iStockPhoto also works for those who know how to render images; some of their most popular images were created on a computer! Have three killer stock photos ready for iStockPhotos inspection; they will want them when you sign up.

Start by selling your own extra stuff. Then, once you get a feel for selling your extra stuff, go door-to-door in nicer neighborhoods in your town. Develop an eye for what will sell and what wont (old laptops, for instance, could be a gold mineif you know how to format them to get rid of the previous owners personal data.) Sign a contract where you take 25-30% (or more) of the gross sale. Your customers will be happy to get cash for their old junk, and youll make some good money selling other peoples stuff.eBay

It may not pay well, but there is a growing demand for this. Write 200-300 word articles and submit them to article directories. Potential clients include bloggers, marketers, and small businesses. You can write articles in a niche in batches and sell them as a package to one or more clients, or you can offer your services for hire per word or article and let your client give you direction. A foundation ofkeyword researchis important to succeed at this job (unless youre just taking direction from a client), but keyword research is learnable.

If you have a background in journalism, or just a passion for it, you can try your hand at submitting articles to publications. Dont just randomly fire off articles, however; have a plan and, preferably, a contact at the publication you wish to submit to. The good news is that there are publications in pretty much any niche you can think of. To see some publications that are hiring, visitOnline Writing Jobs,PoeWar Freelance Jobs, .

An easy job; doesnt pay well, but also a quick way to make some money. Sign up oneLanceoroDeskto start, and/or advertise your services in entrepreneur forums. Requires good hearing and a good command of the English language. You may also want to invest in a foot pedal if you plan to transcribe often. Make sure you knowhow to transcribe interviewsbefore you start your first job.

There are entire books written on how to become a virtual assistant, so this job is definitely worthy of more research. My advice: Focus on one niche (I just hired Lisa Morosky ofVA for Bloggers, for instance.) Also, reach out to potential customers directly and let them know what you can do for them instead of hitting up freelance web sites. Finally, you may want to consider resources such asAssistU, which provides training for up-and-coming virtual assistants.

If you understand the basics of keyword research, you can make a good monthly income from eHow. eHow pays you a percentage of the ad revenue they make from each How to article you create. You can crank out a few articles a day with relative ease. Try this for a month; assuming your article titles match up with what people are searching for in Google, you can make a significant income. The great news is that you write your articles once and get paid month after month. Ive seen figures of $100-$150/month for 30 articles.Make money writing for eHow.com.

Enjoy making silly videos? Even short, silly videos can sell products online. Find an product worth promoting that has an affiliate program, then target your video toward potential customers of that product. In your video summary on YouTube, place your affiliate link for the product, and after the video, do a 30-second still frame showing a short URL where people can buy the product. If your video is funny, informative, or useful, you may sell some products. Big tip: Try to promote a product that makes you a fair amount of money for each sale, but doesnt cost a whole lot for the potential customer. You can find products onCommission Junction, for one.

Alexis Dawes created a product called Desperate Buyers Only. I interview her for an upcoming case study on Inspiring Innovators, where she mentions that she is able to make up to $97 from ebooks as small as 12 pages. The key? Finding people who are incredibly desperate for the information you provide and then doing good research to find a real solution to their problems. The result? Happy customers whose problem is solved, and money for you a win-win situation! Caveat: It may be tough to find a real desperate buyer niche (Alexis reveals some in her case study). Here are some hints: When were you last in a situation where information would have either saved you a lot of money or a lot of pain? Has someone else close to you been in a situation where they could have used information to avert pain? Think legal, medical, and financial niches.

Yes, you can make money online.I run a few small niche websites. For instance,How to Convert PDFis a tiny site that has free videos on how to convert other types of documents into PDF format. It sells a piece of software called PDF Creator, and I make a few dollars every time someone buys from that site. I promoted the site using pay-per-click ads and it was profitable. Dont copy me directly, but do find the intersection of people needing help and a tool, ebook, or software program that will help them fix their problem. Then, create a website designed to get them to buy it!

Local businesses are struggling. Many have websites, but arent getting any results from them. Others dont have websites at all. You can help by learning search engine optimization, how to set up an email list, and more, and then implementing these for local businesses. If you typically hang around geeks, web marketers, or the Web 2.0 crowd, you may be surprised how many business owners are 10 years (or more) behind you! If you can deliver results, business owners will happily pay. Find customers by going door-to-door.

I hired David fromWeb Geek 4 Hireto upgrade my blogs and install new WordPress plugins. He charges $5 to upgrade a plugingreat for him, since most plugins only take a few minutes to upgrade, and great for me, since if anything breaks, David gets to clean up the mess! You can make this afull timeposition; there is a ton of demand for these services. Find customers by contacting bloggers directly. Get references from bloggers who understand the value of outsourcing these tasks.

Anything fromAmembertoQuickbooksis fair game here. In the hosting industry,iDevAffiliateandPlesk Billingwere the pieces of software we would have paid a lot of money to have someone else deal with. The more niche and more complex/annoying/frustrating the software, the better! Even if the software company offers free installation, you can make hundreds or thousands of dollars training business owners or their employees on its usage. Focus on one piece of software and become the trusted expert. Create videos and tutorials using screencast software likeCamtasiato increase your profitability; this may also lead into a niche product that you can sell. (Amember offers free installation, but it took my boyfriend and I over 10 hours to configure it properly. Thats definitely something I would outsource next time!)

I experimented with this in 2008 and made over $800 from one interview. The key here is to understand a pain point that people are experiencing, interview an expert, and ask the expert the questions that the people experiencing the problem are having. Then create a small website and sell the interview. Theres more to this, including having good copywriting skills so your website sells the interview well, and knowing where to advertise, so dont expect to immediately pull in hundreds of dollars. That said, its a neat way to quickly create a product. Get the interviews transcribed, then string a few interviews in the same industry together as a membership site or bundle that you can sell for more money.

From configuring a shopping cart to installing and tweaking blog themes, there are virtually unlimited projects out there for geeks who enjoy working with small business owners to get them up and running online. Find people looking for web geeks onthe Warrior Forumor other places where entrepreneurs gather.

Fancy yourself a good designer? Try your hand at creating a logo or other design that a company loves!99 Designsis the most popular marketplace. Beware, however; you wont get paid unless your logo wins against many others, which makes many designers unhappy. In my opinion, this is a great way for a budding designer to build a portfolio and learn quickly what clients love.

Competition is stiff, but if you are a savvy designer, this is a good way to pick up extra dollars. Even better, if you are anartist, this is a good way to make your art skills pay off. Consider that every design will need to have a reason why the customer should buy the book or follow that person on Twitter to have a real impact. Twitter backgrounds, in particular, are in hot demand right now. For measurements and caveats of Twitter backgrounds, readHow to create your own Twitter background.

Not very exciting work, but in high demand from bloggers and small businesses. This involves setting up accounts on all of the social bookmarking services and then bookmarking your clients websites or latest blog posts to help them get more traffic. You may be competing against software that does this, but in many folks opinions, its better to have a real person do it. Even better is if you can goose your accounts with plenty of friends and become a star on a few of the services; then every site you bookmark has higher credibility and you can charge more. To get an idea of the social media sites you will need to sign up for, start .

This is something that is fairly easy to learn and also in high demand. On Windows, one good program to edit audio isSony Sound Forge.I use Sound Forge Audio Studio, but if you are doing this professionally, you might consider the upgrade to Sound Forge 9. Get the hang of editing out ums and ahs from audio. Even better is understanding the flow of an interview conversation and editing out portions that dont make sense. Finally, learning to find and add intro music really gives podcasts that professional touch. Advertise your services onoDeskoreLance. I pay people to do this for the podcasts I am setting up on Inspiring Innovators, and its a job that can definitely be done from your house.

How to Choose A Business. How do you choose which business (out of many ideas) you will actually run with? I discuss my strategy.

Trouble Finding a Job? You May Have to Change Your Perspective. How one person found so much work she became unavailable, while many others in her same niche suffered through layoffs and low pay.

Three Business Ideas That Thrive in A Recession.Want to start a business? Now may be the best time. Here, I give you some ideas on how to appeal to customers during this recession.

These ideas are basic. The money get you will get is minimal for the time involved and I value my time (REAL hourly wage) much more. There are some exceptions in the list though that gave me ideas.

@Tyler: Many of these are for people with no tech skills to easily pick up. If you have skills in the tech industry, it will be easier to succeed in this market.

Also, some of them are deceptively simple. For instance, lets say you spend 40 hours this month learning keyword research and posting 30 how to articles on eHow. And you make $20. You may think, Wow, fifty cents an hour. What a waste of my time. Except, next month, after the articles settle higher in Google, you make $40. A year from now, having done nothing else, you are making $100-$150/month. And assuming Google doesnt change their rules, you should continue receiving checks for years with no additional work.

This isnt imaginaryI know folks who have done this. Keyword research is straightforward to learn, and articles are simple to write most people just dont know this exists, or they think it couldnt possibly work for them, or theyre flat-out lazy. 🙂

Good post, Erica. You have provided a good list on how to make money online scam free. I would go for Help local businesses develop an online presence and Interview other people and sell the interviews as these options would help me to interact with other businesses as well as other businessmen. This is a good way to network yourself and make your own circle of friends which may lead to something better.

Very nice article helping people that just get started. It is important that people know that money can be made online. However it is more important to be doing than keep investing in the next get rich quick product.

Though many of these jobs are in the lower echelon of pay it will give a person ideas and the experience to make more money. From some videos I created in Camtasia for people that needed solutions, I actually has people contact me direct and make $95.00 an hour.

I charge that much as I deserve it, and also I prefer to work on my own business as an affiliate marketer. I find this better for me as it allows me to control more of my schedule and not get involved in price wars.

Good list. Some definitely good examples, if people really want to try. I think interview other people and sell the interviews will work the best. Or just build a website and post those interviews. I have managed a few websites where we interviewed people and those get a lot of visits from Google searches. For anyone out there willing to interview people I would recommend it, it will make you money.

Interesting to see wage deflation in web technology now occurring domestically (USA). Happening sooner and faster than I thought.

I agree with Pritesh: build relationships with real people first and foremost. Helping local businesses get online is rewarding in ways more than financial.

I do number 12 (Helping local businesses with their online presence).

I got laid off a few months back from my accounting job, (was already confident that I knew my way around the web, seo, web design, Google Adwords, etc.) and I offered my services to local businesses.

Im now 5 clients in and while I havent replaced my full-time salary yet, Ive been hanging in there.

Seriously, this is not hard to do, and you can outsource most of the work or anything you cant do.

Yes, Erica, this post may lead to more competitors for me, thanks alot! 🙂

Haha, but the truth is, there are so many cities out there, with so many small local businesses, there is room for folks who can get in there and make things happen.

I would be happy to answer any questions on this.

Another great way to earn income is to start your own blog and add google adsense to your blog.

Everybody should have their own blog or website now a days. And, everyone can earn money doing what they love. I have found that when you take your own hobbies, passions, and interest and turn them around to help others, you definitely earn any income you want.

The best part is-you love what you do. Do your research on wordpress, a hosting company, and pick a hypnotic website name and domain name. Then, just start blogging about a particular interest, hobby, or passion of yours. As you start doing this two things will happen. One-people are interested in your hobbies because you provided some kind of value in that niche. Two-youll soon discover what works, what doesnt work, and what people are after. Then, youll be able to put a spin on your niche and tailor it to what people want.

Remember to provide value in your niche. Dont make your blog ego-centric. People want solutions and answers, not what you did this morning. How to blogs, latest findings, current news, and entertainment are things people want. Take your hobby and spin them into a how to, latest finding, etc.

Thanks so much for this informative post! I have been trying to find a way to work from home ever since my son was born in 2003 and I just havent found the right fit yet. Ive dabbled in the VA thing and sold a few things on ebay. I am actually now starting a business (in its very early stages), but I would love to write articles for magazines as well.

Will do 4, 5, 8, and just may hire David in the near future. Thanks for the great post!

For those who are struggling financially, keep in mind one thing: youd be surprised how motivated and successful you are when you NEED to succeed. For example, Im self-employed. I NEED to succeed at being a virtual assistant, and I NEED to succeed at being a blogger, otherwise my husband and I dont eat! Let the desperation drive you. 🙂

Great list, Erica. I think Ive done the majority of these at one point or another. 🙂

Wonderful ideas! something for everyone whos willing to work not whine. Thanks for sharing the first steps!

Very informative read and those 20 points really do give a base on which to start earning good money online.

Most people unfortunately fall short of making a good income online beacuse they try to take too much information on board and then do not follow through on the required actions to make it happen, but if they act on at least some of these 20 points and you will start to make money in a resonably short space of time.

Great post. Im going to try Mechanical Turk and the ehow articles. Eventually, I will do a small niche website.

Happy Birthday enjoyed the post and granted your birthday wish with a digg. Going to have to give some of these a try. So many ways. Just pick one and do it.

I like the ehow one might have to be next months case study.

First, I would like to say, Happy Birthday!! Second, Awsome post!

Third, I see that I found your site not in error but fate. I finnaly found a human being behind a website. I do know NOW how people can truly make money online and I am extatic to get started. From reading your list of comments, some did not understand the meaning of being new to trying to make money online. How they say Just start a website or Blog. Some of us thought RSS Feed, Niche, Keyword Search, etc was greek. In otherwords, like me being a nurse it would be like a Dr. telling me to just run down and handle my brain surgery for me!LOL!!I did however find most of their websites informative as well enjoyable. Again, You are an ANGEL and I am looking forward to your next post!! I will keep you posted on my success.

Id definitely be interested in hearing more about the VA stuff where do you start? And about keyword research, finding a niche, discovering potential clients how do you go about those things?

Good starting list! I appreciate the idea of establishing a small income stream that may compound into substantial revenue in the future. The same principal applies to investing and anyone that believes there is not work involved or that you can get rich quick with little effort is greatly mistaken. I have owned/sold several successful businesses, none of which were built over night or the easy way long hours are mandatory for any business and you can forget about The Hourly Value of Your Time thats an employee mindset.

Second, I am interested in your experiment with 15, Interview other people and sell the interviews. Looking forward to reading further details about your experiment with that particular venture.

How refreshing it is to read an offer sharing so many creative ways to earn money online. It is especially nice to receive this information from someone we can trust. I too have been burned by online scams; so I apreciate your free offer to jumpstart those of us who see the benefit of this list.

I found all the writing ideas very helpful. I will be pursuing those because, as a writer, I feel I can be a valuable asset to those who may need assistance from a devoted and experienced scribe.

Great article on the basics for Internet beginners.

An Internet business can make all the difference in ones financial well being in this difficult economic time. Go for it.

Be able to do what you want to do when you want to do it!

Could you show me an example of a website that sells interviews.

I have an interview website coming out soon at (its not quite ready for launch yet, but will be soon!)

If youre signed up for my free business tips, youll get a notification when I launch the site.

Id like to try from No.8 and No.19, hope it does work.

Wow. I plan to investigate several. I already sell on eBay, but selling other peoples stuff can be iffy. Those I will look into are 13, 14, 16, 18, 19, & 20.

Those are some really solid ideas, Thanks so much for that. Im trying variations on 4 and 8. Ill let you know how it goes.

Id like to try from No.8 and No.19, hope it does work.

I am not techno-savvy as some of the people above, but the VA and the Mechanical Turk gigs interest me. Please publish more about these. Thaanks for the info! Great job and I digged it!

Thanks for this post Erica! Im actually in the process of looking for ways that I can supplement my current income and these are some really interesting ideas. Id like to learn more about: Help local businesses develop an online presence, Interview other people and sell the interviews, and Write articles for magazines or other publications.

Wow, this is a very useful article. Liked it very much and found it very usefulThanks a lot

Awesome article! noted down on notebook (same as yours!) Definitely will do it on my spare time. I am actually practicing how to sell affiliation products. After completing it, I will move on and try other methods to make side incomes too.

To add more to your twenty list, heres another article I found which is similar to yours, called 30 real ways to make money blogging Worth a look!

Thanks again, for sharing such an awesome list. Cheers.

Everyone thinks making a buck online is a cinch its not!

It took me some time to really master the whole write good content and they will come mantra.

I will say to anyone looking to make money online

if you want to be successful go all out, otherwise youll never reach your goals.

Going all out really takes some good tech skills in order to utilise your income. Finding a niche market is nigh on impossible if you are an absolute beginner. But lets not take a negative stance on this.

A friend of mine went around all the local antique stores, took notes of the antiques and photographs of them. He then published them on eBay. He became so busy that his wife has given up work to work with him full time instead. She works extra hours, but its more fulfilling than having an idiot boss breathing down your neck.

The reason for their success sheer determination and reasonable marketing skills.

Another friend found a burger bar, which served chilli burgers. He had never tasted these before and loved the taste of the chilli sauce. So he got in touch with the supplier, and supplied them with bottles and lables, and started taking orders from restaurants world-wide, through a little (very little) marketing savvy. He started 2 years ago and is now about to be bought out for over 1.2 million.

Are you catching my drift yet? To make things very blatant, you will not make a good income online, unless you are tech-savvy, or spend good money on good consultants. There are a million+1 blogs like this that give no real direction and are used purely to market others website and the ads that they carry (have a look all around this site!)

The way to make any money is initiative and hard work, and use the internet as no-more than a tool to utilise for that initiative. I really mean that. Its just a tool to help you in your endeavours.

You can do it, using some imagination.

You can stop reading now, unless you want another example ?

I recently gave some marketing tips to a bunch of local professional photographers who formed a company about 3 years ago. There are 7 of them and they were making around 400 a month (collectively). So I advised them to create a website, show their individual skills on the site, and start promoting themselves. (No no no, not the way you are already thinking!) The skills about their technical know-how, courses they can offer, and (very importantly) reviews of the latest equipment on the market.

I told them to get the review from the PR departments from the camera manufacturers, and the reviews were sent on a weekly basis from the manufacturers to this bunch. Next to the reviews, I then advised them to place adverts where a viewer can buy the equipment reviewed.

There income has gone from 400 to over 3000. At the cost of determination only, and no cash injection.

Now, do you get my point? And if you do, what is stopping you?

Oh, I just want to also add, Erica Douglass is very good at marketing, hence her main income is from sites like these. They are good sites, but the ideas given do not give a real income at all. Well done to Erica and I wish you well.

This is so good for all those folks who are wondering if its possible to make money online. You provide adequate proof that there are many legitimate ways to make money online and the $-amount simply depends on the desire and dedication.

Keep up the good work with your inspiration for others.

oops, Ive used the wrong email address for my avitar.

Great article. The eHow bit is legit, I have 32 articles I wrote about a year ago and get about $20 every month sent to my paypal account.

I recently started a new blog called Project DB9 and am literally trying every online way to make money I can get my hands on. I found this blog while doing research for some new ideas and signed up for Mechanical Turk. Its tedious but I will give it a shot for a week or so and post the results here for everyone to see.

Im trying the commission junction thingbut the problem is getting traffic to the ads.

I guess its too late to edit my name.supposed to be Natespost

Im looking into making some revinue online, I have a blog and Im trying to get a google adsense accoung. once thats approved I can start posting advertsiements to my blogs. Along with that im using amazon Mechanical Turk. I just started these two internet moneymaking tools, I guess next month I will make another comment and let everyone know how it works out for me!

While some of these are great ideas..others, like Mechanical Turk seem to take a lot of time for very little $. The eHow seems to work. Another suggestion while you are looking for work is to list your resume at sites that pay you when potential employers download your resume. They collect a fee and give you part of it. m even pays you when people youve

Making your home a better place to live doesnt always require cash or credit. Working with what you may already have can produce style miracles; pantry staples can make tired or grubby items as good as new; and sorting now can save you both time and money in the long run. Check out these 10 quick projects.

1. Organize open kitchen shelves by color.

That jumble of dishes, mugs and storage containers is ready and waiting for a little sorting.

Take everything down and group the pieces that work together colorwise. Perhaps you have several shades that you could arrange for an ombre effect, or one or two shades that you could balance, as shown here, or

lots of pieces in a single hue. Mixing in clear glass is a good idea, as it wont interfere with the carefully picked palette.Taking your beloved items down to group them by color is also the perfect opportunity to give both shelves and treasures a thorough dusting.

Planning a decorating project can be a pleasing and creative endeavor in its own right plus itll help you get the combination of elements right the first time when youre ready to go ahead with a new design.

Gather imagesthat catch your eyein a Houzz ideabook perhaps ones with an appealing mood, clever feature or the perfect color scheme.

Then send away for samples of fabric, tile, paint and wallpaper, and pin them to a board to see how they work together. Try to keep each sample roughly in proportion to the area of the room it will occupy.

If some of your bed sheets were bargain buys and the comfort shown in this photo is a million miles from your scratchy reality, try this remedy, which relies only on whats in the pantry.

Wash the offending linens with about 1 cup baking soda and one-half cup white vinegar. Then feel the softness when you next slip between the sheets.

Discover other uses for baking soda

Do you get frustrated trying to find a fresh sheet set when its bed-making time? Instead of keeping sheets and pillowcases in separate piles, store sheet sets inside one of the pillowcases.

This way, you can just grab and go, knowing you have everything you need without disturbing each pile when its linen-changing time.

Adopting this system also may make a glass-front linen cabinet an attractive option, rather than a potential cabinet of horrors.

Whether your dry foods are stashed in a purpose-built pantry or in standard kitchen cabinets, emptying and reorganizing can help save money in the long run.

Put like with like, and then put the cans and packets with the longest shelf life at the back of the cabinet and work forward, so you use them in the right order and dont end up coming upon long-expired foodstuffs.

You also can make things more ergonomic by putting the ingredients used most frequently on the shelves within easiest reach.

The most assiduously cleaned bathroom can lose its pristine edge if the brassware gets coated in limescale.

Fortunately, the remedy is in your pantry. White vinegar will dissolve the stuff thats coating brassware. Soak a cloth or paper towel in the vinegar and leave it in contact with the buildup for an hour or so, and then wipe and rinse for faucets that look like new.

Dont do this with plated faucets, as you risk damaging the surface. Its a good idea to test cleaning methods in an inconspicuous area first.

You dont need a walk-in closet like this one to create streamlined clothes storage a little time spent sorting can reap benefits in even the most basic setups.

First, make sure youre hanging only what needs to be hung (so fold T-shirts and sweaters). You may find that the extra space you create means your ironing efforts wont be compromised by the crush as soon as you put things away.

Putting similar items together is worthwhile, and not just for neatniks. Follow this strategy and youll not only find things more easily when youre in a hurry, but you also may avoid purchasing duplicates because youll be able to see your existing collection in your minds eye when youre buying.

A pleasing arrangement of objects aka a vignette can take a room from bland to beautiful and definitely neednt mean shopping for new pieces.

The idea is to get the eye to travel around your display, and a pyramid shape will achieve this. This bedside lamp is at the top of the pyramid, with the vase of blooms and the radio plus vintage books completing the shape.

You may need to bring in accessories from other parts of the house to forge a link between the elements in the vignette or snip some flowers from the garden. In this room, blue links the blooms and the radio, while the paperbacks are in a complementary orange.

Gallery walls are an effective way to hang pictures, but they may involve an outlay if you take the approach of linking elements with picture ledges or the same frame style.

However, if you find an existing element that will link your collection, you can get your gallery for free. This dark-colored wall does the job, providing a backdrop that grounds the grouping for a successful display.

Alternatively, review your existing artworks and use those featuring a similar color in the pictures themselves, or opt to paint frames you already have the same color. Or go for the same theme (like nature or architecture) to make your group harmonious.

If youve taken the time to tackle dry ingredient storage, dont neglect its fresh-food partner by leaving the refrigerator disorganized or, worse, emitting nasty smells.

A baking soda solution is ideal for wiping down and dealing with any lingering marks inside the fridge. Then organize the contents, bearing in mind the same use-first rules and chef-friendly interior arrangement as you did with the pantry.

Leave a small bowl of baking soda at the back and youll put a stop to the odors that want to hang on in there too. Replace it every two weeks.

@schroederbaker: Would like to know where your proof is about baking soda absorbing odors is a myth and please provide a link to the chemistry concerning the ability of sodium bicarbonate.Chemistry has proven sodium bicarbonate does neutralize acidic particlessuch as sour milk or your smelly sneakers. How? sodium bicarbonate is alkaline based.

But you are right, it doesnt absorb anything – it neutralizes. How does it do so? By its crystal surfacescoming in contact with acids-it reacts with acidic particles. Besides baking soda is not pure sodium bicarbonate. Its a mixture of odium hydrogen phosphate and potassium hydrogen tartrate. Its a compound.

Question being is how effective is it? In a frig it will also absorb water vapor which tends to make the powder crusty, hence less surface for the alkaline to neutralize the floating in the air acidic particles. Whether there is enough sodium bicarbonate to keep your frig sweet smelling is another story. Probably not totally. The chances of various acidic particles flying through the air to make contact with sodium bicarbonate is …….well, chancy at best.

Best way to use sodium bicarbonate aka baking soda as an odor eater is by direct contact, not indirect. Wanna remove those terrible odors from your cutting board? Make a paste 1:1 of baking soda and water. Scrub your board for sweet smelling success. Do your tennies smell like…… blah…….. sprinkle in some baking soda. Leave it for a while, then shake it out. Smells like a rose.

As for a frig, it will in all probability work if you place a dish of the baking soda powder in an air tight small container with the meat or fish or cheese over night. It will lessen the smell, but not totally get rid of every bit of it. Then change it out for the next 24 hours. Or place a dish in every closed container and on every shelf of the fridge.

Besides, if your frig smells that bad, try cleaning it at least once a month.

But is it true that is doesnt neutralize acidic particles – the reasons behind the smells you dont like? Nope. So where is your proof that is doesnt work as an odor eater.

Of course, you can dump a bunch of activated charcoal aka carbon like in filters of an aquarium into your fridge. But then it would be an expensive method anddisposal would definitely not be eco friendly.:)

I dont have to use baking soda in my new fridge we bought Summer 2014. The GE Cafe french door we have has a build in odor filter that you change about every 6 months.

Anyone know where to find door shelves for cabinets deep enough to put cans instead of just small spice jars? We have a new base and upper cabinet I designated for the pantry and since its a 22 deep upper cabinet I want to install door shelves for the things used more often.

@diyher: Cans are heavy. If you want to put them on a door, the best ones to use that wont fall are the over the door types. Reason being is the weight that can shift the door on hinges. You can find them in most all places that sell pantry shelving. They are usually wire framed. The best ones hang over the door and are also screwed into the door. Just search for it using your browser Adjustable door shelf system for can goods.

As for the GE odor filtration system, the frig uses charcoal. It does get expensive over time buying their replacement product. You can DIY much cheaper by getting charcoal separately (at any home stone, pet store, box hardware or online) and sticking it on your shelf in a container. Charcoal is carbon and absorbs moisture/odor from the air. They work in bathrooms, too. Even if you buy it in bulk, its cheaper than the charcoal replacement from GE.

Natural Ways to Induce Labor

Natural ways to induce labor may be chosen for many reasons, such as avoiding invasivemedical ways to induce laboror for maternal/fetal risks that may result in a medical induction. Its important to note that none of these methods for inducing labor at home will work when the body and the cervix are not ripe. These methods may help ripen the cervix – making it soften, efface and dilate – but will not start labor on their own unless the body is ready.

Before attempting any of these methods, review thevalid reasons to induce labor. Also included is a guide to determine the Bishops Score, a measure of whether medical or natural labor induction is likely to be successful and what conditions prohibit induction of any kind.

Commonly cited natural labor induction methods include:

Does sex induce labor? While rumor and anecdotal reports abound on this topic, research evidence also exists. Two hormones are of particular significance in its effectiveness as a labor inducer. But, at nine months pregnant, the answer may – or may not – be what women want to hear.

This is a topic steeped in old wives tales and personal tales of heartburn, indigestion and stomach upset. Are there reallyfoods that induce labor? As maintaining appropriate nutrition is an essential component of a healthy pregnancy, it should not be neglected in the later weeks in attempts to self-induce labor.

Usingnipple stimulation to induce laboris a less familiar method, although one of the most effective of the natural ways to induce labor. While it may not be commonly known, it can also be utilized as one of the most effective techniques for stabilizing regular contractions once labor begins or getting a stalled labor back on track.

Before artificial means of labor induction such as pitocin and cervidil were available, women in need of induction turned to herbs. Midwives and family physicians understood that certainherbs induce laborand the appropriate quantities in which to administer them. Unfortunately, much of this herb lore has been lost through the ages and widespread environmental pollution has robbed many herbs of their historic potency, limiting their current effectiveness as labor inducing agents.

The practice of usingcastor oil to induce laboris somewhat controversial, as its use has been associated with the potential for adverse effects in the baby, namely meconium staining at birth. Its use also carries some transient unpleasant side effects for the mother. Caution should be exercised when considering this method. It should only be used with the consent of your care provider after 41 weeks of pregnancy.

Usingacupressure to induce laboris the most comfortable, enjoyable technique to attempt. Acupressure serves many purposes during pregnancy from alleviating common aches and pains to relieving nausea and morning sickness symptoms. Like the other methods, it is only effective when the body is demonstrating signs of readiness. As it carries no known adverse effects, it can be attempted at a later date if unsuccessful initially.

The last method of merit is the easiest to implement. Every time youwalk, you are using one of the natural ways to induce labor. Walking is a time-honored method of speeding labor. It uses the force of gravity to help the baby descend further into the pelvis and aid in ripening the cervix to prepare for the birth of the baby. With every step you take, youre one step closer to holding your baby.

7 ways to protect your privacy on the internet

TNW uses cookies to personalize content and ads to make our site easier for you to use. We do also share that information with third parties for advertising & analytics.

The Internet can be a dangerous place these days.

Malicious software apps (malware), viruses, and phishing scams are growing in number and sophistication. Data breaches and identity theft are becoming commonplace.

Even among reputable sites, there are ever-multiplying ways that yourpersonal datais being tracked, collected, and stored. The use of your personal data, and the manner in which it is saved and secured can create real risks to your privacy and even to your finances.

Being able to maintain your privacy on the Internet is becoming harder, but its never been more important.

Here are seven ways you can protect your personal information and privacy online:

Youre probably already doing these things suggested by organizations like theNational Cybersecurity Alliance, but it doesnt hurt to be reminded because they are so important:

Since malware and phishing scams are getting more sophisticated, try not to open emails that look suspicious or unusual, especially if they relate to your email, social media, financial services, or utility accounts. Delete these messages.

This goes double for links and attachments in emails related to these kinds of accounts or services dont click them unless you are absolutely sure of the source. If you get an email about an issue or past due balance or a refund, rather than click on a link, go to the providers website directly and log in to your account there, or call the provider.

Keep your computers operating system, browser, and security software up to date. Turn on automatic updates for these wherever possible.

Be especially wary and vigilant if an offer demands you act immediately, sounds too good to be true, or asks for personal information.

Updating privacy settings on websites and servicesparticularly on social media and search sites such as Facebook, Google, and Yahoois a good place to start protecting yourself. This can usually be done under a settings menu option.

Since most sites default to information being shared publicly, changing settings will help you make sure your personal information is seen by fewer people. Ideally you should choose to share information only with people you know.

Why is this important? Oversharing of social media information leads to numerous risks, including home break-ins by criminals who see that you are on vacation. Also, limited sharing and/or deleting tags on photos and editing your Timeline can help remove potentially embarrassing material from being seen by people who dont know you well, including colleagues at work, acquaintances, distant family members, or potential employers.

Here are some privacy links and suggestions for Facebook, Google, and Yahoo:

: choose Friends only for these settings; Friends of Friends is next best but vastly increases the availability of information to people you dont know

You can also access basic privacy settings by clicking on the lock icon on any Facebook page and choosing

for actions such as removing tags of you on photos or removing something someone has added to your timeline

for additional protection; in particular, we recommend setting up

under Login Approvals (this requires confirmation from your phone if you or someone else tries to access your account from an unusual browser or Internet location)

Blocking third party cookies on your browser is another good way to maintain some anonymity while online. Blocking cookies makes it so websites will have a harder time tracking the last time you visited, what your username is, and whether or not you should be signed in automatically. While blocking cookies can be less convenient in some cases, the increase in privacy is worth the tradeoff.

Two browser plug-ins that help block cookies are:

Many websites now are giving the option to link accounts. Google, for example, allows you to link all your differentGmailaccounts in a browser. Many sites are now giving you the option to use your Google login to access their site.

While convenient, linking accounts can create more risk. If one of your accounts is compromised, all the linked accounts will also automatically be at risk. So unlinking accounts is a good way to help protect information.

Always use a secure wireless connection (and stop using public Wi-Fi networks). If you dont have a strong password on your home Wi-Fi network, its time to create one.

Use a firewall: protecting your computer from unwanted network traffic is important. The good news is that modern OS releases generally contain built-in firewalls. Make sure they are turned on and you have set security settings on high:

It is also important to have some kind of anti-virus or anti-spyware to keep your computer clean and free of viruses.

Microsoft provides itsSecurity Essentials softwarefor free.

Your username and password combinations remain critically important for maintaining security online. The problem is that with every website needing a password, people tend to get predictable or lazy by creating simple passwords or using the same passwords over and over again on different websites.

Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters. But even passwords with simple substitutions like dr4mat1c can be vulnerable to attackers increasingly sophisticated technology, and random combinations like j%7K&yPx$ can be difficult to remember.

One way to create more secure passwords that are easy to recall is to try passphrases short words with spaces or other characters separating them. Its best to use random words rather than common phrases. For example, cakes years birthday or smiles_light_skip?.

Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites.  It is especially risky if you use the same password for entertainment sites that you do for online email, social networking, or financial services sites. Use different passwords for each new website or service you sign up for.

Having trouble remembering all those different strong passwords? Try using apassword manager application like SplashIDthat organizes and protects passwords and can automatically log you into websites. Companies and groups can use a single sign-on solution or abusiness password manager like TeamsID.

You should delete cookies regularly (in Chrome, for example, go to the Chrome menu and then click Clear Browsing Data.) You should also log out of social media websites like Facebook, and even your Google account when not using them (and dont keep them open in tabs on your browser).

If you want to take the next step in getting better privacy, try using a browser such asTorthat routes your IP through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A virtual private network routes all of your data through a proxy server so your IP address and in many cases your user data is protected.
